Chapter 6

The next morning, Ainsley woke and stared around at her bedroom, groaning. She’d had a horrible night. Memories of trying to calm down a very upset Kascius had dominated. He finally calmed but with that coldness cloaking him that was even scarier. He’d promised to not say anything but would keep a close eye on what was happening.

She’d explained that the doctor was involved and would get the glass tested, but it could very well be that there was nothing suspicious and that it was just her nerves. He nodded at that and didn’t say anything more. He’d left very quickly afterward, not looking for any further explanations, almost as if he’d decided that he would sort this out himself, and that scared the crap out of her. The last thing she wanted to do was go back to that house today. But her job was to look after Bella, though Ainsley hadn’t expected the job to turn in this direction. She still couldn’t get over the fact that she and Kascius were talking like normal human beings. It had also been a shock to realize she hadn’t gotten over him. He tugged at her heart in ways no one else could.

She’d known, but knowing it and acknowledging it was a whole different story.

Her sister was in the kitchen when Ainsley finally got out of the shower and dragged herself down for a cup of coffee.

“That was quite the heart-to-heart you had last night.” Sibel looked at her sister curiously, over the rim of her mug.

“It was.”

“Couldn’t have been good though because you looked upset and then went straight to bed.”

Ainsley looked over at her sister and nodded. “Yes, it was very difficult.”

At that, Sibel shook her head. “You know that relationships are supposed to make you feel better, not worse.”

“Until you realize how badly you messed up. I had no idea his home life was so awful.”

Sibel looked at her. “What’s that got to do with your relationship with Kascius?”

“It’s not about the relationship,” she stated, not wanting to go into all the details. “But yesterday at their house it was a pretty ugly affair, as Bella flat-out told me that she really wants nothing to do with him.”

At that, Sibel looked at her, one eyebrow raised. “That seems harsh, especially under the circumstances. What does a person have to do to deserve that?”

“I’m not sure he did anything,” she clarified. “According to Emily, the minute he didn’t want to be a farmer, his parents wrote him off. And even that was predisposed in a way when he was very young, simply because he didn’t enjoy riding around on tractors with his dad.”

Her sister stared at her.

Ainsley continued. “Honestly, it was upsetting coming from Bella, but one has to consider her situation. But then more details came from Emily, and I’ve known her for a long time. She is not a person who makes accusations, and she would never make up something like that or embellish the details.”

“No, she wouldn’t.
